Travertine is a natural stone with a rustic look and durability. Travertine is a sedimentary rock, similar in composition to limestone. Its distinctive look is formed by geothermal springs and the evaporation of water and mineral over time. Basically it is found tanned in colour but at the same time can range from deep golden browns to light creams in addition to deep, Persian red and varied strained silver.

Finishes are very limited in travertine tile’s case. It can be tumbled or cobbled, honed polished or cross cut. Tumbled or cobbled tiles are usually left “unfilled”. This means that many pores and holes are left alone, to help preserve the rustic appearance of the stone. Extremely large holes, which go straight through the stone are common, and should be filled with grout during installation. While this flooring surface sets the precedent for practicality, it also presents a distinguished, novel style. Since this tile is comprised of completely natural stone, no two tiles are alike. One of the most commonly known travertine is travertine chairo, a light coloured stone which can range from a light tan to a much deeper, sandy shade, sometime within one stone. Sometime known as ‘ light travertine’ or ivory ‘travertine.’ it works well as kitchen backsplashes.

Another common travertine is travertine noce, a very deep, golden brown when honed or polished. It can be sometime called “walnut travertine” or dark travertine. It makes an excellent flooring material, as its dark varied tones hide dirt and wear and tear extremely well.
